As a rule, etymological dictionaries of Slavic and Baltic languages do not usually relate Slavic *grozьnъ(jь) ‘terrible, ugly’ to Lith. gražus ‘beautiful’, despite the possibility toreconstruct a common PIE root, namely *grog’ - for both of them. The main reason why thetwo words are not usually connected may lie in their semantics, as the meanings seem tocontradict each other. The present study offers a hypothesis about the common origin from a reduplicatedsound symbolic etymon which could have denoted a type of behaviour of birds spreadingtheir wings to signal threat or attract attention. Another possibility is the coalescence of homonymic etymological groups of sound symbolic origin on the basis imitation or synesthesia.
