The paper focuses on the stereotypical representation of men and women in jokes. Traditional social roles of men and women, marriage as an institution, sexual relationships, etc., are the most frequent joke targets. Of most significance in the interpretation of gender-related jokes is the explicit and implicit social context. Differences in humour understanding and appreciation parallels differences in social power between the two sexes. The analysis makes use of the incongruity theory of humour, a cognitively oriented theory.
