Chiasmus and Chiastic Structures in the Old Testament and Exegesis of the Text:
The text of the Scripture was created millennia ago and is the result of synergy between God and man. But even inspired, biblical writers expressed in the way of thinking of their time and the text keeps the typical literary devices of that time. If we want to reach the literal sense of the Bible text we have to use and to “go in” the way of thinking of the ancient writers. One of the typical literary devices in the all ancient world is chiasmus and chiastic structures.
Normally today is the reading of the text, regardless of what genre it belongs, from the beginning to the end. In antiquity except the linear thinking in literary unit is used and otherwise – depend on the concentric parallelism. This is so called chiasmus or chiastic structures. In chiastic structures there are the other kind of “moving” – from outside to inside, from the end to the centre. The core meaning is in the centre, not in the end (how we say today “conclusion”). This way of thinking and expression is typical for ancient Semitic world. The epic of Omer is also chiastically structured. Modern exegete can find chiastic structures in both Old and New Testaments. Discovering the chiasmus has a very important role for the exegesis of the text of the Scripture and sometimes can prove the integrity of passage and whole book.
