Methods for numerical computation of the gamma function G(x), of its logarithmic derivative Psi(x) and of the Kummer and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions 1F1(a,c;x) and U(a,c;x), resp. for real a, c and x, are proposed. For the purpose expansions of the functions in power series around point zero and some properties of G(x) amd Psi(x) are used. An application of the techniques is considered in the theory of azimuthally magnetized coaxial ferrite waveguides, supporting slow TE0n modes.
