The article considers the Bulgarian military actions in support and against the Byzantine capital, seeking answers to several key questions:
How many of the attacks, blockades and sieges of Constantinople in the period 8th –14th c. were performed by the Bulgarians or with Bulgarian participation? Which of these campaigns, blockades and sieges were implemented independently, and which were held in coalitions? Which of the Bulgarian actions were directed not against, but in support of the Byzantine capital? What was the frequency and the duration of Bulgarian military campaigns directed against Constantinople? Can we draw parallels between the Bulgarian military activity against the Byzantine capital and the evolution of the medieval siege warfare? Last but not least, the article also addresses the terms used in the presentation of the Bulgarian military actions against Constantinople (marches, attacks, blockades, sieges, etc.) In conclusion, the author summarizes that the Bulgarian military pressure pursued political goals rather actual capture of the Byzantine capital.
