 The goal of the paper is a critical analysis of representative research in the field of multimodal communication within the framework of a linguistically oriented model of analysis – a field unexplored up to now in Bulgarian linguistics. Four predominant theoretical approaches to the unravelling of the interdependence between the visual and verbal mode of interaction are surveyed: the visual-semiotic approach, the cognitive theory of metaphor and metonymy, the conceptual blending theory and the relevance theory. The application of the model in the field of print advertisements and political cartoons is also discussed.
