In this article we tried to answer the important question that we ask with regard to pragmatonyms and the definition of their place in the language system. In general, there is no single view to understand pragmatonyms as part of the onymic system. Opinions of individual onomasticians and linguists on this subject vary; even Slovak onomasticians do not attribute the onymic status to them unanimously. Our considerations clearly imply that pragmatonyms can be attributed a specific proprial status. However, we also point to the fact that within the pragmatonymic denomination, it is possible to delimit the proprial and/or appellative component as part of the proprial description. Pragmatonyms are characterized by the attributes of serialness, reproducibility, exchangeability, diversity and dynamicity. These features represent the basic characteristics which result from the quality and nature of pragmatonyms. In this regard it would be appropriate to define the notion of a pragmatonym clearly and precisely and thus unify the onomastic community. This would prevent the chaotic perception of this specific onymic class of chrematonyms and enable its further manipulation.
