LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN AND K. AJDUKIEWICZ ON NORMATIVENESS OF MEANING-RULES
It is the aim of this paper to compare selected theses of the “late” Wittgenstein and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz (a Polish analytic philosopher of renown), especially theses of the latter’s conception of language in the thirties of the 20th century. The philosophical ideas of both of them are interpreted as paradigmatic patterns of the so-called „directive theories of meaning”. These theories stipulate that linguistic meanings are constructed on the basis of definite normative rules. The normativeness of „the meaning-rules” can be understood in the light of an idea of performativeness of social institutions. Comparative analysis is made in respect of the great transformation of the contemporary philosophy of language - from abstract formal studies of language to a pragmatic turn in their development.
