The article strives to problematize an analytical strategy, widely employed by scholars of travel writing, which focuses on the travelling subject’s gaze and its quasi-mythical power upon the predominantly passive objects of the traveller’s observation. “Meals in Foreign Parts” shift attention away from the ubiquitous gaze and engage with representations of social visits, meals, transfers of objects and border crossings.
