The Bulgarian critical reception of Joseph Conrad - deficiencies and availabilities
The article studies the trends in Bulgarian critical appraisals of Conrad’s works and the transformations they undergo in the last century and currently. They are few but in-depth and insightful, keeping in focus the most essential messages of his works and outstanding life. These critical endeavours would not produce a monograph for a long while, but monographic trends can be observed in some of the articles. The enhanced interest in Conrad’s figure and his work is also conditioned by the current trends of intensive cultural interaction and the growing fascination with migrant writers of multicultural origin. Perhaps these recent developments led to the production of two monographs on Conrad – Stefana Roussenova’s comparative research „Dialogues in Exile: Joseph Conrad, Vladimir Nabokov, Eva Hoffman“ (2010) which addresses the problems of exile and migration in select works by Conrad, and Margreta Grigorova’s monograph „Joseph Conrad – the Creator as Seafarer“(2011), which builds upon, overviews and completes the seminal achievements that contribute to the expansion of Conrad studies in Bulgaria.
