ΚΑΤ’ ΕΙΚΟΝΑ AND ΑΥΤΕΞΟΥΣΙΟΝ THE DYNAMIC INTERPRETATION OF ICONICITY OF MAN IN THE THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT OF ST. MAXIMUS THE CONFESSOR The study focuses on the existential connection between the iconic status of man and the gift of self-determination as key anthropological сategories in the theological reflections of St. Maximus the Confessor. The iconic status brings together man’s existential and hypostatic potencies for life, but this status should be understood in a dynamic perspective, i.e. as a gift, appeal and invitation for realizing these potencies, whereby the self-fulfillment of the personality takes place. Maximus builds his dynamic concept of the iconic status of man by means of the key anthropological category ‘αὐτεξούσιον’ (self-determination), the latter being a personal ontological privilege and an existential potency of man to fully realize the potential of his iconic status in likeness to Christ. Self-determination is a fundamental personal category that allows for the iconic status to be understood in the perspective of an active, dialogical and synergic ontology of participation. The existential connection between iconic status and self-determination is examined through four fundamental positions in the theology of St. Maximus: the relation of ‘in the image’ to ‘in likeness’ according to the apophatic mode of predication; the dynamism implied by the terminological pair ‘λόγος-τρόπος’ (principle-mode); the aretological perspective; and the truth of man as being-in-feat. Maximus always construes the iconic status of man as a dynamic eschatological fulfillment of the iconic status, whereby ‘likeness’ is actively achieved. According to contemporary theological prosopology, ‘in the image’ constitutes a personal dimension of human existence, whereas ‘in likeness’ denotes the self-fulfillment of the personality in likeness to Christ. This basic anthropological truth is illustrated by the ontological dyad ‘λόγος-τρόπος’ (principlemode). The terminological pair implies that whenever human nature is examined, a certain way of existence is referred to. Of crucial importance here is the ontological aspect of will, because for Maximus precisely the self-determined movement enables the adoption of a personal τρόπος (mode) of existence, by which human nature realizes the potencies of its logos and perfectly achieves its iconic status in likeness to Christ. St. Maximus interprets this anthropological truth also in aretological perspective, as for him virtue is the most authentic way of existence and, consequently, a means and a way to the realization of the iconic status of man through synergy and περιχώρησις (interpenetration) with the grace of the Holy Spirit in Christ. In the end, the dynamic concept of the iconic status of man is revealed by demonstrating that feat manifests the most profound dynamism of human nature, i. e. its ultimate goal to attain likeness and deification in Christ through the grace of the Spirit. The purpose of this personal ascetic effort is the achieving of a loving (determined by άγάπη) mode of existence, which, for Maximus, is identical with the ontological content of the person as a bearer of the divine image. In conclusion, the dynamic interpretation of the iconic status of man confirms that: 1) the iconic status is always a gift and an invitation to realize the truth of being in Christ; 2) self-determination is a basic anthropological category, which enables the realization of the personal τρόπος (mode) of existence; 3) it is possible to make synthesis of the energetic and the hypostatic dimension of human existence and, hence, of the spheres of ontology, on the one hand, and of ethics and ascetics, on the other.
