Goran Vojnovic's novel "Southern Scum Go Home" ("Čefurji, raus!") is a story about Slovenian citizens who are originally from other former Yugoslav republics (pejoratively called čefuri) and who, with the loss of Yugoslavia, also lost their own identity. In this paper, we analyze the inability of the main characters to fit into the Slovenian society, levels of their marginalization (from the personal to the spatial) and the attempts to overcome it. Are they doomed to be strangers in Slovenia, although they were born there? Would they also be strangers in the republics from which they originate? In a small part of the paper we examine the position of minorities in Slovenia and the attitude of the Slovenian government toward this novel.
