 In the present paper we will try to examine the application of discourse analysis in EFL/ ESL teaching as a tool to increase students’ English language competence and to improve their discourse skills. The main emphasis will be laid on cohesive devices as a way to help students develop successfully the essential skills of writing, speaking, reading and listening in the target language. We will also try to examine the difficulties students experience with cohesive devices and how teachers can organize the EFL lesson in order to help them overcome these difficulties.
