In this paper, the problem of women’s social and legal status in the Frankish society in the 5th and 6th centuries is studied as far as the information from the work Historia Francorum by St Gregory of Tours allows this. For this purpose, the position of a woman in marriage relations and the family is discussed as well as women’s legal status, their role in the society’s political, cultural, and religious life. Since in his work Gregory focuses his attention mainly on the aristocracy, about the status of women of low social standing one could only speculate using other historical sources from the epoch of course.
The information from Historia Francorum shows that women’s social and legal status in the Frankish society of the 5th and 6th centuries was excessively precarious because of the political instability, the deep social changes and the lack of a system of standards and values uniting the society. The complicated historical situation contributed to strengthening women’s economic dependence as well as their subordinate position in marriage. High-born women were placed in especially unequal position in spite of their considerable social prestige. While among the common people women were esteemed for their work for the household, in the ruling stratum women’s only significant role was related to their reproductive capabilities, i.e. to their obligation to continue their kind. Actually most spheres of social life were inaccessible for the Frankish gentlewomen. Nevertheless, in Historia Francorum, there are images of women who took an active part in the political life due to their strong will and intellect.
