 A study of a newly discovered vita of Shaykh Bali Efendi reveals many features typical of hagiographical literature, but a comparison with other sources helps untangle the historical from the mythical. The article points to the reasons for mythologization and suggests that, in its context, this was not only possible but to be expected.
