The monograph is a regional geomorphological study on the analysis of spatio-temporal relations in the triad "relief-substance-structural form" within the range of the transitional block step of the rivers Iskar and Yantra. It appears to be a notable morphotectonic fragment in the macrostructure of the Moesian epiplatformal plane between the two bipolar morphostructures: the Lom depression to the west and the North-Bulgarian dome to the east. Structural and geomorphological features and boundaries of this fragment are tectonically predestinated and geophysically well characterized. Spatial parameters and borders of the Iskar-Yantra step coincide with the boundary between the Moesian platform and the Pre-Balkan, which is traced by the South Moesian flexure, and its western and eastern boundaries are outlined by the imposed fault/fold asymmetric valleys of Iskar and Yantra. On the basis of structural and geomorphological analysis are disclosed and studied the regional properties in the plasticity of the crust: transverse and longitudinal differentiation in the spatial organization of structural forms (symmetry, asymmetry, orostructural axles, etc.); types of river-valley network; generalized tectogenic relief; spectrum of river terraces; number, age and spatial behavior of the initiating denudation surface and quaternary sloping foothills levels. An analytical mapping model of structural-geomorphological map is made on the basis of modern approaches in the regional geomorphological synthesis. By means of the sequential general geomorphological spatial analysis of the cartographic model information allowing to identify the structural conditions and local anomalies in the orientation and asymmetry of submeridional valleys of Iskar, Vit, Osam, Yantra and Rositsa is extracted and the imposed paragenetic relationships between flat and sloped to the northwest geological structures of the Moesian plate and plasticity of the crust are determined.
On this basis, the block-mosaic texture is decrypted and a structural and genetic typification and spatial modeling of the constituent morphotectonic steps in the internal structure of the Iskar-Yantra block step: Iskar-Vit`s, Vit-Osam`s, Osam-Yantra`s asymmetric block step and Resen-Dzhulyunitsa`s structural depression is made. A paragenetic and kinematical subordination between the geotectonic regime and the ongoing differentiation in the plasticity of the crust in the form of structural steps and depressions with differentiated spatial behavior in the region studied is settled.
Based on the structural and morphological analysis some regularities are revealed and the patterns in historical and palaeogeographic development of the region are added. An attempt for disclosure of paragenetic correlation between the compressional endogenous model of morphogenesis in the Carpathian orogenic arc and rhythmicity in the palaeogeographic development of Iskar-Yantra step during the Quaternary is made.
Special attention is devoted to the study of thick loess complex, in order to clarify palaeogeographic conditions in the formation of modern physical and geographical structure and study the dynamics of morphogenetic processes.
Regional geomorphological research has proved the presence of brittle slope deformations in the form of gravigenous steps within the valley of Studena River or around the villages of Sovata and Karamanovo along the right capable fault slopes of the Iskar River valley in the surroundings of the village Pisarovo and the town of Iskar and the valley of the Osam River in the surroundings of villages of Muselievo and Novachene. The analysis of the spatial development of contemporary morphogenetic processes has enabled carrying out zoning of the region in order to identify potentially endangered or risky areas, endangered by running of dangerous geodynamic processes and phenomena ‒ earthquakes, landslides, floods, deflation, erosion, subsidence in loess land and etc. Assessing risk areas has its definite practical importance to the organization, management and sustainable development of the territory.
Analysis and assessment of the current state of the topography and dynamics of geodynamic processes has important scientific and practical importance. Interest in consideration of these current problems from geomorphology is magnified especially given that the modern landscape is a major component of the natural environment for the organization, functioning and development of the socio-economic system.
